My transmission makes a noise and makes the tractor jump slightly when pulling in 4th gear. My first feeling was that I had hit a rock with the field cultivator, but there are no rocks in my area. That is the feeling you get when this happens. It is an intermittant problem, occurring at random times and only in 4th gear. I shifted to 3rd for quite a while and it will not do it in 3rd. When this happens in 4th, the shifter does not jump out. It just makes the noise, jumps slightly and keeps on going. I searched the archives and found a fellow with the same problem, but no one responded to his post. It is titled"730D tranny noise" on page 46 in the archives. I should also add that 4th gear is very quiet when pulling except for this jumping problem. It will however kick the shifter out of 5th gear at times. Are these 2 problems related?? 5th gear is not noisey either. Sorry for being so long winded, just wanted to give all the info I could. Thanks everyone!!!

Scott, you gave us a lot of information but unfortunately not quite enough. ~Does your trans have the optional 5th gear?,,, Or just answer this question...Is 1st gear, OR 2nd gear in the upper L/H corner of the shift quadrant? That determines if 4th gear is on the L/H or R/H side of the shift pattern & also determines if 4th drives through the counter shaft idler gear or not..

This tractor has 1st gear in upper left. Thanks for your reply.

Scott, in that case your problem probably isn't the counter shaft. ~Probably the place to start is to take the tractor out run it in some of the lower gears & stand on the turning brakes. If you get that same snapping noise suspect a bull gear tooth or brake shaft pinion tooth. If the noise only appears in 4th gear pulling a load then probably you should pull the trans covers & look at 4th gear for a missing or broken tooth, or excessive play on the sliding shaft...

Thank you. I will check it when I have time to tear into it. I guess for now I'll just have to take a little longer and do my work in 3rd gear as it seems fine.
