What is the best technique for removing the air stack from the air cleaner casting on a late A? It looks welded. Maybe grind off the weld? I hope to save the stack. The angled baffle in the stack broke loose, fell down in the stack, and is restricting air flow, but the stack is good overall.

Thanks!

I had to replace mine, but ground it off with a Craftsman $55 grinder. Also have used it with a thin blade to cut off bolts. Use a face mask.

First I bought one that looked good in a junk yard. When I got it home and scraped some grease and dirt off I discovered that it had already been circumcised and rewelded. Guess I should have asked myself why it was removed and was still lying on the platform. That is when I ordered a new stack from the dealer (c.a. $60) and ground the old one off. The fellow that did my painting also rewelded the air stack, new grill screens and excised some other dents.

HIG:

An air stack for a 70D is a different animal. The factory option air stack for the 70D mounted in place of the forward air pipe, and that located it just forward of the muffler cross line. Page 35-3 of the 70D parts books shows it. There was an Air Stack Kit with all the parts called AF 2280R. I doubt it's available.

The other option would be to find the the parts from a 720D (see picture), which locates the air stack directly across from the muffler. In either case you have to punch a hole in the nose piece or the hood.

a friend of mine replaced one on his A, about a year ago. he bought a new stack from a old guy that wasn't gonna use it, $15.00. he ground off the old weld, and wire welded the new one on. one thing you have to do first before removing the stack, is to scribe a line on the housing at each end of the dent for the steering shaft. then before welding the new one on, line up the marks that way the air slots and the dent are in the correct place.
