I have a 1951 model B that started slipping out of 3rd gear while the shifter remained in position. I can shift out and back in and it will go . Now it is slipping out of 4th but the shifter moves as it slips out.I found a piece of a bearing race and 3 ball bearings in the tranny oil drain.Where should I start to find the problem ?COULD IT BE IN THE SHIFTER?

Shane, jumping out of gear without moving the shift lever says it's in the overdrive/under drive part of the trans. Jumping out of 4th & moving the shift lever is probably more apt to be in the 4 gear set area. ~In both cases the probable cause is worn trans bearings or worn bearing bores in the case. ~Pull the trans top shifter cover & reach in & try to move the sliding gear shaft & counter shaft. You should probably also pull the L/H 5th/6th cover & try to move the gear shafts to look for excess movement.
~Then pull the little cover on the R/H end of the input shaft & look for a loose or failed bearing or excess end play in the input shaft.
~If you are real lucky you just have worn shift rail detents on the shift shafts but in most case the trans bearings are worn & loose...
~Once you pull the covers your problem should be evident, if you still can't find the problem you might have to dig a little deeper. Almost every one of those old 2-cylinder Deere's I work on require some or most trans bearings....
