2040 Steering seal problem

My 1983 John Deere 2040 steering shaft seal blows out. It is the rubber part that pushes out. I am thinking there is too much pressure. I have replaced the seal below the steering wheel and the rubber part of the seal with the spring around it pushes out around the steering shaft. Are there any common problems that would cause the seal to do this?

Thanks,

Tom

I'm not clear from your description which seal is blowing out. Is it the one immediatley under the steering wheel?
Have you or anyone else had the valves assemblies out of the steeing housing? The upper and lower valves look the same but are different. One has extra holes drilled in it to drain the oil back to the reservoir. If they are reversed then the oil blows out under the steering wheel right after you start the tractor. If that is not it then you'll have to dig deeper into the valve, there are several o-rings sealing the valves to the housing.
I learned the above when working on a 2440 years ago. I expect that your 2040 is the same or very similar.

It is the seal directly under the steering wheel that is blowing out. It just started leaking all at once. I have never took the steering apart.

The book says to check the hydralic pump and pressure control valve first. I don't have a set of hydraulic gauges so I am going to have to buy a set.

Later the book says "a large volume of oil leakage past seal 6 in adjuster 7 indicates restricted or blocked return oil passage". Then it mentions improper installation of various parts can cause the seal to leak. The fluid pours out past the seal at a very high pressure.

Thanks for all of the advice. I was just hoping that it would be some common problem.

Thanks,

Tom

I don't remember all the details after 10 plus years but I never took the valve housing off the tractor to replace the 6 0-rings in the houseing for the valve assemblies. I think the steering shaft with the valve assemblies on it will come right out of the housing after you remove the steering wheel and then the adjuster. Turning the steering shaft which ever way required to screw the whole works up and out of the housing.
The service manual does not mention this procedure.

probably the o rings in the valve housing are shot and need replacing.

I forgot to mention that it has power steering.
