Anyone know which older 3 point sickle mowers (ford, dearborn, massey etc.) would work on my 420 utility and which wouldn't? I think some of them might not work well because they would need stabilizer bars that wouldn't fit my tractor. Did John Deere make any back then? Don't want to get stuck buying something that wouldn't fit...thanks for your help.

The first mower built for the 3 pt on the Dubuque tractors was the model 9.
I would think older Ford or Massey mowers would work on the 420, they use the same style lower 3 pt arms.

Yes deere made one that would be of that era the number 39. But if you want a really good mower i would invest in the 350 which is a balanced head mower and will mow more areas than the 39 will. Thanks Chris

Chris, I am interested in a sickle bar mower also. What do you mean "will mow more areas than the 39 will" ?

My point about it mowing more areas is. That a 350 will mow at any angle. Even straight up. The 39 mower will basically only mow when its parralell to the ground. Thanks Chris

We have two 350 mowers. Our ground is two rocky for haybinds. The 350 is a good mower, but get a operators monual. and forget what you know about the older JD mowers. A 350 has a whole differant setup. It is tricky to ajust but once you read the manual and do it a few times is is easy. We like the idea when mowing and we hit a rock or an ant hill and the cutter bar kicks back, we turn off the PTO pullout, make a 360% turn while raising the 3PT and the cutterbar kicks back into operating. When you get back on the swath, put the PTO in gear and drop the mower and you never stopped.
