Broken Crank on 4010 Diesel

I'm attempting to resurrect a 4010D with a busted crank shaft and am curious if this a common phenomenon with these tractors. When I went to buy some parts at the local dealership he said he had another one he could sell to me also with a busted crank. Kind of got me thinking. I plan to be thorough and have the head and block checked and boiled but would appreciate any heads up advice I can get as well. Crank busted on the rod journal for the 5th piston from the front. It's gonna need a new flywheel as well based on the number and depth of the stress cracks in it. It's a major restoration project but should make a pretty good garden tractor when I'm done.

I have seen this problems in the 4010 and the early 4020's also the 3010 and early 3020's. The blocks flex in the oil pump area and cause the crankshafts to break. This is more of a problem on tractors that have had loaders on them. You will need to take your block to a machine shop and have the line bore straightened up.

John deere recomends changing the harmonic balancer every 5000 hour of operation or whenever there is some type of chankshaft failure. The service rep. at the dealer I worked for told me this. I have never seen it in any service manuels. I think this is a factor in the broken cranks.

Sounds like good advice. Someone grabbed the one that was on there (the tractor was in a salvage yard) so I bought a used one. This may not be a wise manuver. Thanks.

Kennt G, A stock original crank in a four or six cylinder gas or diesel John Deere engine was not prone to give any problems. Where they did is when and if they ever had a rod or main bearing failure it was common that the crank would show stress cracks after this kind of failure. The other place where I have seen these cranks fail is when repair shops have them welded up after a bearing failure. More times than not they don't last very long. Do not buy a welded crank. Pay the price for a good original used or new one. Good Luck, Dave W.

I don't remember hearing of any problems on original tractors from any of the local farmers around either. That kind of thing will get around pretty quickly. My take on it is as these engines get older and see there 3rd, 4th and 5th rebuild (depending on their maintenence) they probably need to have the cranks reground. If its not done quite correctly there are stresses that develope, especially on the outer edges of the race where it is difficult to grind square, and this can lead to failure as well as the causes you described. My plan is to spend the money on a new crank, cam and followers along with a complete rebuild because as much fun as taking this thing apart has been, I really dont want to do it again. I also noticed the casting that holds the hydraulic pump on the front of the engine was welded down the center near the engine. There is a damper on the front of the crank so I'm not sure if its possible to get excessive vibration from the pump to destroy the crank but it is suspect as well.

A friend of mine had a 4020 gas with a broken
crank,it would run fine,but the front pulley didn't turn.

Don't know of a history of crank problems, others here will know better than I. However, I do know of two 4010 Ds in home area, one was bought new 40 years ago, the other near new and while they don't work that hard any more, used to be primary tillage tractors. They're still going well and in good shape. Good luck with it.
