Just pulled the head on my stuck MT to get to the pistons and found a crack on the top of the block. It runs parallel to the cylinders on the side opposite from the push rods. Looks like it started from the large center hole in the middle of the water jacket and pretty much runs the length of the cylinders both ways. It goes all the way through to the water jacket.

The head gasket that was on it doesn't match the parts book or the replacement I bought. I don't know if that contributed, but it really doesn't matter now.

Is this crack "superficial" or should I give up on the pistons and start looking for another block?

Larry, I have had 1 bored and sleeved and it did not leak but it was on a A model but considering the costs I would find another block. but then you have to go all the way thru the engine to make it right. My 2 cents worth and good luck.

Larry, I don't know what part of the world you're in, but around here in Texas it would be much easier to find another block for that MT. The crack you are describing sounds like it penetrates into inaccessible parts of the block that would not be weldable. While searching for parts for my H, I've seen a number of MT's lately that have been retired to parts status.

I'm also in Texas. Northwest of Austin in Burnet. I figured it was a goner, just needed confirmation. Any leads appreciated.
