I Recently acquired a JD 855 it is a 1986 model with 570 hours. The tractor runs fine until it comes under a load and the governors kick in to accomadate the load. I have tried cleaning the fuel system with the exception of the injectors. The air filter is clean and I've even run a diesel engine fuel treatment through it. Any Possible solutions would be tried. I'm afirst time tractor owner. Thanks in advance.

Given it's age hecking the injectors is a good idea. While ovious, a new airfilter and back-up air filter if equiped can't hurt. Make certain mud dobbers havn't plugged something. Is the injection pump seal(s) intact?

Roger:

I can't say that I have ever had a complaint of too much smoke under load on my 855. Mine is a bit older and has the exhaust exit the side shield, as opposed to the later ones that exit below the side shield.

Some black smoke is normal, like Clooney said, afterall it's a diesel. But too much under load might be more serious. If you want, you could check the valve clearance, and all it will cost you is a valve cover gasket. But if the smoke is really is pronounced, I might be pull those three injectors. Tape the fuel input ends to keep any dirt out(I always like to tag them to put them back into their respective holes....not that that really matters) and take them to a reputable diesel shop or to your JD dealer. They can check the cracking pressure and more importantly the spray pattern. It could be as simple as cleaning or replacing the nozzles. The pattern does make a difference, both on power and economy.

That said, of it runs well at idle and lightly loaded, it might just be it's manner.

You'll have to make the call as to whether it's smoking more than normal. I can't say that mine smokes any more relatively speaking than my 70D with a fresh overhaul and fuel system rebuild. About I ssee is an occasional puff that it emits while it's pulling hard. I think it shakes a chuck of soot loose out of the pipes.

Sorry I couldn't offer more than that.

Roger, black smoke under load is trade mark of the Diesel engine...[some more than others]
~My Deere 755 smokes pretty good under a load also..
~One thing that helps on the 755 is the low exhaust exit that blows the smoke low & away from the operator. I think the 855 has an exhaust exit that blows more of the smoke back on the operator.
~F-I-T has an 855 so maybe he will be able to shed more light on the 855 smoke problem.
