My little 40 three point lift surges.....when it is lifted up, its bleeding down some and then the pump lifts it back up. This is not a slow process, it will do it continually. Probably every 2 seconds. Enough to where it shakes the tractor.
Where should I begin to look to fix this problem?

My 40 did this too. At least part of the problem was air in the system from a leak on the return side. The hydraulic oil was foamy.
We also found the spring holding the pressure against the lift disc wasn't working-- rusty. This is on the lift lever used to lower or raise the 3- point.
I think air was the big problem.

Alan, I have had the same problem, and cannot give you the exact cause. You could try draining the system and flushing it with kerosene and then filling it with new 10w non-detergent oil. Make sure the system is full and runs out with the petcock open on the rear of the housing. I have always been able to remedy this surging by removing the lift unit and doing a complete tear-down and cleaning and replacing all the piston rings, seals, o-rings ect. Cleanliness is stressed in the manual. Years ago Deere offered a rebuild kit, now you have to buy each little part seperately. It costs about $150 for everything. If you plan to do this, it is best to purchase the parts manual and the service manual. They are not expensive and are invaluable if you plan on keeping the tractor. The parts manual is number:PC862 The service manual is number:SM2013 You can order them from Deere by calling 800-522-7448 I think this is still the correct number.
