I am having problems I think with the governor. I can start the pony and it sounds good. the governor holds the buterfly closed tight against adjust screw all the time. So when I start to motor the diesel it stalls. I have adjusted the linkage like the IT manual says. turnt the load screw on the carb but nothing seams to work except pulling on the governor rod a little, then it speeds right up and cranks the diesel right over. the sn# is 7209244. Has anyone had this problem? do you think it is the gov? Any and all thoughts welcome.

when I started with the spring. there was 2 springs going from a cotterkey in the L bracket to the butterfly. I took the key and a spring out and have one spring now and slide the L bracket all the way out and about strech the spring clear out. But the way it looks to me the spring gets past center long before it would open the buterfly up. now the gov will move when the motor dies way down and it looks to me like it has to fight the spring the other way to open the motor up. Thanks all any thoughts now?

Heath, as Clue said there is [or is supposed to be] a spring on the top of the pony running between an "L" shaped bracket & the throttle shaft lever. That spring wants to hold that tiny carb wide open all the time & the governor tries it's darndest to hold it closed to the correct running RPM. ~The only thing that keeps that carb AT IDLE is that the dash lever forces the governor arm to stay at the idle position [until moved to the run position].
~Are you moving the pony throttle control dash lever to RUN position? If not it will stay at idle. If you are putting the pony throttle in run then it sounds like you have a missing, broken, or mis-adjusted pony throttle spring.
~On that pony governor being bad, there isn't much to go wrong in that pony governor & when they fail it usually runs wide open all the time & not idle. So first suspect that spring, then suspect a bent spring anchor bracket, or mis-adjustment.
I don't have access to transfer pictures where I'm at right now [I'm mobile on a laptop] so maybe Frank [aka F-I-T] will post a picture for you later today...

Guys:

Here's a picture of the bracket and spring. Clue and Clooney have you in good hands.

As thet said, the spring runs from the throttle shaft and to the end of the bracket. You slide the bracket away from the carb to gain high speed and toward the carb to lower the top end.

This is probably the most important part in the linkage, and I can't count the number of times I have seen them mis-routed or missing all together.

Let me know if you need any digital photos. I can take some for you.

Good luck !

I'm not familiar with the pony engine. On most engines with a governor there is a spring that pulls the throttle open. Then as the engine speeds up the governor flyweights push the throttle closed. The governed speed is where the spring and governor balance each other.
Perhaps you have a broken or disconnected spring somewhere?
