I've gone to the thinnest gasket between fanshaft and gov. Does the fan bearing growl when worn?

Harry, was it noisy BEFORE you went to the thinnest fan shaft gasket? If not & it is noisy now you upset the fan shaft gear position & now have the gears running in a new position & that is usually in the unworn area on one or other of the gears. ~Once those gears get worn in they will scream if their position is drastically changed.
~The only proper way to adjust the fan gear to governor gear mesh & back lash is to pull the governor/fan shaft off the tractor & set the HEELS of both gears to be even using different gasket thickness between the fan shaft & governor, & gasket thickness variations between the governor end cover & L/H end of the governor. If that means the gears now run in a new position you might need to use a small honing stone & remove the wear & flash on the heels of the gears where the new contact takes place. Just match both the gear heels [backs of the gears] & dont try to match the gear toes as the toes arent the matching end you have to worry about.
~If you installed that thin gasket to remove fan shaft play be sure to pull the mag or distributor out so you can watch the governor shaft for movement & are ONLY adjusting for governor gear free play & not trying to also adjust for cam to crank to governor gear play [A COMMON PROBLEM ].
~Now to answer you bearing noise question. The fan bearings can give a dry growley type sound when dry or worn. A gear adjustment mismatch will give more of a howl whiney type sound

Hey Harry, I also hate excess fan shaft noise. It detracts from that sweet putt putt idle sound. Sure, bad bearigns can cause a growl as you questioned, but mis matched fan/governor shaft bevel gears can also cause a noise but they make more what I would call a whineing sound. Your problem may be that when you removed shim gaskets at the fan shaft to governor and didn't adjust the shim gaskets at the governor end bearign cap, you may have a bevel gear mis match causign your noise??? The proper bevel gear(s) mesh and backlash involves BOTH the fan shaft shims PLUS the shims under the big end bearign cap held on by those 4 corner bolts. Basically, removal of fan shaft shims adjusts the heel/toe bevel gear mesh, while removal of end bearign cap shims adjusts the backlash, cuz it moves the gears closer or farther apart, although, its actualy the combination of both.

How much fan backlash do you have now????? ??? If its like an inch or two its not too bad but if more, removal of some end bearign cap shims may help your problem. Your removal of fan shaft shims may have her out of mesh. I adjusted mine on a bench with the governor off to get the mesh right then the backlash fairly close. If its the bearigns they need replaced, but if it started after the shim removal, the mis match may be the problem.
