I have several old A's, some with the power lift. Did John Deere ever make a 3pt for these? I've seen the 800 hitch on late styled A's, but not on the pre 1947 stuff. Any ideas?

Tom, I put a 800 3pt on a 1935 A years ago. It only had a power lift not powr trol, but I didn't care cause I was using a cultivator that had guage wheels. I removed the original drawbar frame and adapted a 60 drawbar frame to the tractor so I could attach the draft links. Just welded a flat bar across the front of the frame and drilled 4 new holes to match the tractor. Also welded spacers on the upper link attachments to clear the round axle. If your tractor is late enough to have bosses on the rear axle that clear the cast lettering you won't need the spacers. If you want to install a powr trol instead of a power lift it is an easy swap if your tractor has the large power lift valve box. The early A's had a smaller box than the later ones.

Tom I have a 46 A that somebody has replaced the power lift with a powr-trol and it has an 801 3 point lift on it, works real good too. it has the round axel housing and it doesn't affect the top mast mounting at all.-morgan

The drawbar frame is an issue too when it comes to using an 800 hitch. The older angle iron hitches on the early styled numbered series do not offer a direct way to mount the draft arm brackets like they do on the later style welded iron hitches. I suspect that is why you see aftermarket three point hitches on the early styled tractors as they provide a frame for the lower draft arms to attach to off of the axle. An 800 hitch probably would work ok w/o depth control on the power lift or power trol as all implements such as plows require a gauge wheel to control depth anyway. I suspect 800 hitch axle brackets would only work on square axle tractors. The 800 hitch was announced in 1953 during the early part of the early numbered series tractors, the 50, 60 and 70 but many of the late letter series used the hitch as well. 800 series hitches were sold by dealers as add on items. JD did not install these at the factory. A good quality original and complete 800 series hitch will cost you about twice as much as an aftermarket three point hitch. Also remember that both an aftermarket or 800 series hitch will not offer true 3 point hitch capability related to load and depth control that was part of the Ferguson Patent. Only a JD 520, 620, 720, 530, 630, 730 provides true three point capability relative to load and depth control.

Tom:

I think an 800 hitch would fit a Powr-Lift, but with the "all-the-way-up", or "all-the-way-down" operation, it probably would not have been very useful. Since Powr-Trol had variable depth selection (POWeR-conTROL) it fit the needs of the integral hitch user much better.

Could I, however, replace the power lift valve with a power trol valve? I wonder if anybody has an 800 hitch on a very early A?

Tom:

Yes, you could replace the P-lift box with a P-trol box. I've seen it done many times. I believe it is a bolt for bolt swap. And yes, I've seen a three point on as early a a '41 "B", but it was not an 800 hitch. It was an aftermarket three point unit. But both would basically install and function in the same manner.

Here's a picrute of '46 "B" with a P-trol box and a three point hitch home-built. The fellow also sells plans to build the hitch.
