My 520 has a terrible knock coming from the clutch pully side when I got it cranked. (Has sat for a while) The knock subsides when the clutch is engaged, either moving or out of gear. Any ideas regarding the clutch or (horrors) the crank?? Thanks Pat

Make sure your flywheel is tight. My 520 had a knock from the clutch when I first started it that reminded me of a spark knock from timing advanced to far. I pulled the flywheel to get at somthing else and found worn splines in the flywheel and you could not make the flywheel move by hand. I found out a 50 flywheel will work just fine on a 520, The hub is machined off some on a 50 but one washer under the tin nut made up the differents.
Hope this helps.

Pat, first, make real sure that BOTH the clutch driver [that's the splined cast drive plate in the clutch thats held on with the big bolt] & the engine flywheel are tight. Either one of those will make a terrible knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from the clutch area.
~If those are both tight you could have a clutch adjusting bolt hitting the clutch cover or [try running with the clutch cover removed] or a bearing problem, or other metal to metal contact.
~If everything is tight, try lifting the clutch pulley up & down to see if it has a lot of play, those 520s are known to wear the pulley bearing area on the crankshaft.

this is the inner clutch plate...the splines are badly worn and it slaps back and forth....probably need new plate.
