Since JD no longer supplies the governor gasket for my '46 "A" I'm planning to just run a bead of some sort of gasket maker around the base of the gov and bolt 'er down. I've spoken to folks with lots of experince in this area and they tell me that it's a common practice. I know that this gasket not only seals, but controls clearances between the governor and timing gears, but it seems to me that with the wear on the gears that I have, the reduced clearance not only doesn't cause binding, but improves (reduces) play in the fan.

That said, I have a couple of gasket making compounds to choose from and will get other if need be. one is permatex high-temp red RTV silicone, which cures flexible and has worked well for me in the past.

The other I haven't used before; it's permatex 1 form-a-gasket sealant, which claims to be "fast drying, hard setting" which sounds good, unless I want to get the governor off at a later date. which of these would be better? Or should I be using something else altogether?

Thanks-

Chris

Chris, you will probably need to install a gasket there. Most will be too tight on the cam to governor gear backlash if a gasket isn't used. ~I will also caution you not to use cheap gasket material as it will soften & probably seep oil as oil tends to sit on that engine case under the governor assembly..

Chris:

I believe Greg Stephen carries that gasket. You can reach him by phone or through his website.
