This 720 ES diesel I am looking at in emiting a wisp of white smoke from the flywheel cover. Is this something that I should be afraid of? Is the main bearing on the left side bad?

There should be a vent tube comming from the valve cover and pointing down towards the ground underneath the engine. If that tube is plugged (mud dabbers like those tubes) then the crankcase will build up pressure and vent it through the loosest seal.

Check the vent tube for an obstruction.

Tom, there isn't anything under that flywheel cover that should emit white smoke. About the only thing I can think of is blow-by & that blow-by smoke is getting past the L/H crankshaft seal somehow.
~Unless the starter is full of oil & smoking or the flywheel is rubbing on something there shouldn't be any smoke coming from under that cover.
~You might want to run it with the oil fill cap off & see if you are getting excessive blow-by.
