Rebuilding transmission for spring project; does anyone have any heplful hints. Am I opening a can of worms? I have no choice; the tractor has been in my family since new. I use it about 80 hrs. per year.

K...Texas, there are all kinds of hints but that would depend on what you find while in there.. It would take a book typed out here to talk you through it & then you wouldn't get the good helpful pictures..

~The best hint is to get a GOOD manual & study it until you understand every step [completely].. Then post back & ask any questions on what you don't understand.. A parts manual is probably also a must as it not only shows part numbers but in a lot of cases shows proper part location in relation to other parts.

~Another good hint is to keep ALL the removed parts in order while disassembling & mark all bearings & washers for location..

~If you haven't been into a Deere trans before I can't stress enough the importance of getting a proper manual..

~Once you get into the trans & start finding problems post back for repair procedures & places to find no longer available parts..

Clooney: Thanks for the info; I have an aftermarket repair manual that seems to be detailed and specific. The trans. has a missing tooth on the high side; it also has a loud "hum" in low and high. I hope I can find parts through this outlet; I have received good info in the past. I might need to send followup questions to you. The tractor was purchased new by my Great Grandfather as a gift for my Grandfather. My dad then used it until 1962. In 1975 it was rebuilt by my dad; and I restored it again in 1995 and took it from Texas to Grundy Center Iowa (2 cylinder club) Expo. I use the tractor pulling parade floats and my 10 year old loves to drive it (5th genoration to use the tractor). Maby I'll send you a photo.
Regards;
