3020 loader problem

I Had a John Deere loader put on a 3020 and ran in pond with hay bale. When loader controls, clutch and brake all used at the same time the hydraulics quit. Of the loader, brakes and clutch you can use any 2 at a time but if you use all three its no loader control and no brakes. If you arent using the loader controls and clutch at the same time the brakes also work good. Otherwise hydraulics hold and will snatch bales around like nothing. J.D. mechanic says that is downfall of 3020 and resevoir may fix it. I liked hearing nothing was wrong with my tractor but not the part suggesting 3020 and loaders dont make a pair. Does anyone have front end loader on 3020 and had similar problems to work out. I bought the tractor to put the loader on.

What loader are you using? What year is the 3020? Does the loader have its own control valves, or are you using the tractor SCV valves.? If the loader has its own valves, are they closed center? Does the loader have two way cylinders? If the loader has large one way cylinders, you may need an extra reservoir. If the loader has two way cylinders, and you do not have hydraulics for atleast five minutes with the clutch peddle down, and using all functions continuously, you have a problem in the system that can be fixed. Don't let anybody tell you differently.

If the tractor is a synchro-range, the problem is that with the clutch pedal down, the transmission pump is not turning. The tranny pump is the first step in the hydraulic system, and it pulls the oil out of the trans/rear-end, and then sends it to the main pump. If you have the clutch down and are running a hydraulic funtion that takes a lot of oil (such as a loader), it doesn't take long before the main pump runs out of oil, and you lose hydraulics. A reservoir above the pump will add some "reserve" capacity, but not a whole bunch. This problem was solved in the quad-range tractors by making the tranny pump "live" all the time.

Thanks, it is a synchro-range. Sounds like I bought the wrong tractor for a front end loader. Could this be worked out by adding a external pump.

For what its worth, our 4020 (65 synchro) has a Deere 48 loader mounted on it and have never had any problems like yours. Weve moved, stacked and loaded thousands of 1800-2000 round bales with it every year since about 1977 and the thing never gives us any trouble.

Thanks John and everyone for all the inf. & suggestions. I reached the same conclusion that the 4020 SR and 3020 SR are the same basic tractor and lots of people have loaders on them and theyre not all in the pond. This tractor is about a 66 syncro with I think a 48 loader.

I talked to Frank Moak who advised me that the tractor had a high pressure internal leak and since brakes and steering are prioritized to check the brake bleeders first. Somewhere along the way the bleeder screws had not been retightened when the jam nut was tightened. Unbeleivable it was so simple but it was causing that high pressure leak and brake/hydraulic failure. I had wondered if it had been done to cover up some other problem yet to be discovered but I hopes not. Ive got lots of learning to do on this tractor.

Does that 4020 have an oil reservior above the hydraulic pump?
