Brush Hog issues with JD A

I have a 1951 John Deere A. I recently purchased a 6 foot pull Woods Rotary Mower (Brush hog type). It has a slip clutch. I just installed an overriding coupler on the PTO shaft to help eliminate torque problems. I have two questions I was hoping someone could help me with. First, the overriding coupler extends the PTO shaft which means I no longer have 14 inches between the tip of the PTO shaft and the hitch pin on the mower (with my JD A, I can't extend the drawbar on the tractor anymore than I already have it extended). Is this a problem I need to correct? Second, with the PTO now extended thanks to the overriding coupler, the PTO extends past the shield in the back of the tractor. The manufacturer of the overriding coupler says I need to get a bigger shield. If I'm real careful, do I need to worry about this? Without live PTO, the mower won't run without the tractor moving unless I put it in neutral.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

The 14 inch standard is for turning, the point is mid way between the front and rear universal joints. If you watch the turns and don't turn too sharp you should be ok. My 1938 G has a 1 3/4 inch pto shaft. I bought an adaptor to 1 3/8 but it also extended the length of the pto. I'm not sure this tractor ever had a long enough drawbar to get the now standard 14 inch distance. Anyway when I ran a baler on the G I put a heavy metal plate on the end of the drawbar to extend it out. Think the manufacturer of the overriding clutch is worried that you will get hung up in the pto and sue.
