I just bought a 1010 JD. Before I bought it I started the engine and the carb. was running a little rich. You could smell gas when it was running. I bought it and took it home. I drove it around the yard and it ran fine. Engine sounds smooth. Today when I got home from work I thought I would start it up and ride my little boy around. The gas tank was empty so I put some gas in her. She wouldn't start. I pulled the plugs out and they were soaked with gas so I started cleaning them up. While I was cleaning them me little boy said there was something running out of the tractor. I ran outside and GAS was pouring out of the plug holes. I shut off the gas. I decided to check the oil and it had gas in it also. I guess the carb. float stuck and poured gas into the cylinders all night long and it leaked between the piston and cylinder wall. I decided to check the compression in the cylinders. #1-100, #2-125, #3-100, #4-125. When I was checking the pressure gas was still spraying out at me. Do you guys think the compression is ok? Is it normal for gas to leak down between the pistions and cylinder walls when it has been setting in the cylinders over night. I have drained the oil, removed the filter and going to rebuild the Carb. asap. Do you guys think I have major problems and Have you guys ever heard of this happening?????
Thanks, Rick

Rick,

All the guys above I am sure have vast more engine experience than I ever will. It also sounds like your float/value/seat has permitted the gas to freely flow into the engine...turning the gas off whenever you leave should become a ritual.

Regarding the compression testing, this is where I have been doing some research and have had some discussion with various JD mechanics. Your delta of 25psi seems pretty high. It is also peculiar that you alternate exactly from 100 to 125 between both 1&2 then 3&4 respectively. After you get your float issue resolved, go back and test the compression again...if your delta's are reduced downward to 10-15 points, that's much better. However, if they are the same, then add some viscous [clean] oil to the 100psi heads and try again doing [exactly] all the same things you did previously to keep your testing methodology the same, except for adding the oil. If the PSI increases 15+ points on the 100psi heads, then you may have some internal issues. However, this is just a tool and further detailed examination is probably warranted.

For your convenience, here is a link from YT's article section on compression testing. It should give you the information you need to further test your heads:

Even after the carb rebiuld I would still shut the gas off just in case.

Your problem is no big deal at all. I've had his happen to cars, motorcycles, and tractors. Your carb has a float problem, probably. There are two solutions; rebuild the carb, replacing the float and maybe a needle, or just remember to turn off the petcock between the gas tank and the carb. You'll want to get in the habit of doing this anyway, since you never know when your carb will fail.

As for the fuel in the oil, gasoline is a solvent and a great penetrant. It has no problem at all getting past the piston rings and into your crankcase. Now all you have to do is drain the oil, replace it, put a little oil in the spark plug hole like havvey said, give 'er a few cranks, put the plugs back in and go.

Just don't forget to shut off the fule next time.

Chris

Chris,
I tore the carb down and found that the float had a hole in it and was full of gas.I am going to get a new float, rebuild carb and get a new shut off valve because mine wont shut off when it is turned off. It still drips. Thanks for the help guys!

doesn't sound like major problems to me but I would be careful turning the tractor over with the gas shooting...next will be a big fire from ignition..be sure to pull the coil wire...all you need is a good shut off and carb rebuild...good luck...

yes it happens put oil in the plug holes to lub the cylinders since the gas washed them down drain oil and filter shut fuel of at night!
