I have been stumped by an overheating issue. JD 1020 redlines during warm up. I have replaced the thermostat. Overheats. Removed the thermostat, flushed the cooling system and refilled as to avoid airlock. Overheats. Replaced w/new rad cap. Overheats. How do I test the water pump. It is not bleeding but I can't thinke of anything else.

YOU MIGHT CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT COLLAPSING AND RESTRICTING THE FLOW. THERE SHOULD BE A WIRE SPRING INSIDE THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE TO KEEP IT FROM COLLAPSING.
BUT LIKE THE OTHER GUY SAID, (ARE YOU SURE IT'S REALLY OVERHEATING) MAY JUST BE A BAD SENDING UNIT.
OR MAYBE WE'RE BOTH WRONG????!!!! :-)
JUST A THOUGHT.

Our 1020 was overheating a couple of years ago and it turned out that there was so much stuff stuck in the fins of the rad that it could not cool it off. Blew it out with compressed air both directions and now the screens have to be plugged with hay seed to make it attempt to warm up. Seems like it may be worth a try anyways.

does it boil over? are you sure your temp gauge is ok? try to insert an external temp gauge in the radiator and compare reading with dash gauge.
if the water pump is not pumping, the radiator bottom hose will be cool even when the engine is hot.
if it realy overheats, have the radiator professionally cleaned inside and out.
