I agree with G-MAN. If the 24volt starter on your tractor ever needs to be replaced, for not much more than the price of a reman. 24V starter, you can go with the 24 to 12 volt conversion and have alot better elec. system.

The only con I can think of is that it can be a little expensive, while there are many pros, such as: improved starting, simplified electrical system, fewer headaches with maintaining the system and so on. Deere offers a kit to convert that tractors that works pretty well. It's been a while since we installed one, but I believe it contains a 12-volt alternator, a 12-volt starter and the associated components and instructions to install them. I want to say that the kit runs around $700 or so, but that may be too high. Considering how it's not too hard to put that much in getting a shelled-out 24-volt system back in order and working properly, I think it's a pretty good investment, and certainly improves the starting performance of the tractor. A guy could probably cobble a conversion together by scrounging components, but having a kit, where you know everything is there and have the proper instructions for, would seem to be the way to go for me.

Use 2 alternators. One 12 volt positive ground, the other 12 volt negative ground. You will still have 24 volt starting and Perfect charging regulation of both batteries no matter how imbalanced your loads are.

That two alternator fix would work or using a 12v run/24v start relay with two 12v batteries. For those applications where the loads can't won't be balanced. Imagine the cold weather starts with 24v on a 12V starter. Never did find out the slow cranking problem on my uncles 12V 1971 4020. Since new, after several batteries and starters it still rolls over ssssooo ssslllooowww. Needs ether or a block heater even at above freezing temps.

Possible hydraulic pump issues? Install a manual destroking valve and see what that does for it.

Thanks, didn't think of that. The 4620 which is pretty much identical starting wide. Would whip right over and start when the 4020 would just make some white smoke. I'll try suggesting it but they don't think much of young whipper snappers telling them something.

So where are you mounting the other alternator?
