I am looking at a 5 bottom Oliver 3pt plow and was wondering if a 3020 JD gas handle a plow this size? Thanks in advance.

In fall 1965 my dad called the JD dealer and told them to bring him a tractor and a plow. One day later they arrived with a new 3020 gas and a 4-14 plow. Dad wrote out the check and he went out to plow. Different world today but we used that tractor and plow for all our tillage until 1978 without any trouble but ,I wouldn't want it to be any bigger.

One thing that wasn't asked that is another factor is how deep??? 4, 6, 8, or 10"?

I've always plowed as deep as it will go which usually means you have to have one less bottom. Also, I noticed that many plow with 14" bottoms (at least according to many posts on this site), but I haven't plowed with anything less than 16". Most of the time the farmers I know like 18" because it turns over better and leaves a smoother surface than 14" or 16". Course the speed at which you turn it over will play a big part in that as well.

I plowed with 5 16" (IH 710) with a AC 200 (cranking 110 hp) and could barely hold 2nd low. Also plowed with 5 18" (IH 720) with AC 7040 and 7060. 7040 was probably not cranking 140 hp anymore...getting pretty tired. Plowing hay ground in the fall was the worst...especially if the frost started setting in the ground.

As a kid on my Dad's farm in Ohio I did a lot of plowing with a 2520 gas/synchro. Mostly black ground, some clay, but no sand. Pulled a 4-14 plow usually in 4th gear, sometimes in third especially if we were plowing down clover/sod. The tractor worked pretty hard but never complained or overheated...did use a lot of gas though. It was also too light in the front, it was not unusual in really heavy going for the front tires to occasionally come off the ground a few inches, scary at first, but got used to it.

Your 3020 is about 10 HP stronger and the Diesel might lug a little better, but I would think you're still looking at 4-14's as being about the upper limit.

I used a 4230 diesel on 4-18's a couple weeks ago. Had to nudge the 3-point in a few wet spots to avoid getting stuck, also had to downshift for a couple hard spots on every round. Agree with Taylor, glad I didn't have 5 bottom plow.

3x16's will do you a good job, and your tractor will last longer!

a 3020 gas would have a hard time with a 5 bottom out of the ground that is a 4020 diesel size plow.

I do not think that a 3020 could pull ANY size 5 bottom plow. Maybe if you have very sandy soil you could get by with it but I would definately look for something smaller, In my opinion 4/16's would even be too big. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I realize I didnt add enough info on size of bottoms, which I dont know, and soil type, which is blackland/light sandy mix. I didnt think my 3020 would be able to pull 5 bottoms, even at 14". What would you fellows think would be the limit on moldboard size and number of bottoms? I can pull a 6-1/2 foot JD offset, in the same soil, usually in fourth gear. Also,I have a Massey-Harris-Ferguson 3 point 3 bottom disc plow, but the discs are very worn, and I dont think I can move my wheel in enough to work with this disc plow. I posted earlier on replacement discs for this plow, but received no response to it. Again, thanks for any input.

Years ago when we got our 3020 we started out pulling 4-14's, later went to 3-16's. We plowed all types of different soils plus hills and level land. You'll be much happier with a three bottom and spend more time in 4th gear.

What it will pull and what it should pull are two different situations. Certainly some twit has ballasted a 3020 down to 12,500lbs and smoked across the field in low or maybe 2nd gear with 5 or 6 bottoms. They would also curse the tractor for being guttless, high fuel consumption and short drivetrain life/overheating. A 3020 should never be ballasted over 10,250lbs for drawbar loads. Travel speed should be 3 to 5 mph with the engine averaging 80-85% of max rated. 3 bottoms in most soil and four bottoms only in the lightest of land.
