Electrolysis Question

Will brass or bronze parts get damaged by using electolysis on them. I'm thinking of parts like the brake assembly and clutch pulley assembly that has the bronze sleeve in them. It would be nice to drop the whole thing in to clean them up, but I don't want to ruin a sleeve by having it plate off.

Thanks, Dave

Dave:

I'm not sure. I know that it seems to go after aluminum and magnesium pretty hard, but I use lye as the electrolyte, so that might be what is attacking the white metals.

Copper seems to do medium well, but does seem to digest just the smallest bit. That said, I did dip my clutch pulley and did not notice any erosion of the brass.

If you use washing soda (Sodium Carbonate) it might be less likely to attack brass. I need to study the eletromotive series and see if we can determine if it's safe for yellow alloys.
