Just found out today in my 4020 operators manual that the 540 PTO is limited to 75 horsepower. Now I have to free up the slip clutch on my shredder to protect the tractor. 1000 RPM PTO is good for full horsepower. Is there an industry standard maximum horsepower for the 540 RPM PTO?

I would leave well enough alone and just run it. I have a 72 console with 4430 turbo setup on it, dynos 145 and have never had any pto problems. It pulls a 26 ft Shulte batwing, 1360 disc bine,466 round baler with no problems.

Mike, a mechanic repaired a hydraulic leak and replaced the clutch pack and seals. It still slips as before without a medium load on the engine. I need to put it on a DYNO and check PTO HP, then check hydraulic pressure to the clutch. This is a 69 syncro console. Should be similar to yours, but I am using a small 7' shredder with a 540 RPM shaft. That's where the difference is. You can get almost double the horspower out of the 1000 RPM shaft, which you must be using for your large equipment.

I am using the 540 shaft. Thats what I used to get the dyno readings. Your problem most probably lies in the adjustment from the lever to the pto valve. Make sure when the lever is engaged the pto valve is fully applied. If the valve is not fully engaged you will get slippage in the pto, and a pulsing in the apply pistons causing the seals to wear out prematurely and leakage around the 2 pins. This is assuming it is a synchro. But linkage to valve adjustment will cause slippage on a PS tractor also.

Thanks Mike. I read my small tech manual and it shows the power shift linkage adjustment, but I did not see the syncro. Anyway, is it a simple matter of just shortening the linkage lever to fully actuate the valve, or do I need to be looking at replacing the small valve spring and parts? This may have been the reason I had to split the tractor. At the end it was leaking around the PTO pistons 5 gallons in one long day.

I cant remember off hand which way to adjust the linkage, but with the cowl off the side of the dash(starter side) it should be self explanatory. Adjust it so when the lever is actuated it moves the valve to its maximum stroke.
