I am looking for a tractor to mow my 5 acre yard. There is a 1010 JD that looks to be in pretty good shape down the road from me that is for sale. I would like to know if you guys think the 1010 JD would handle a 6 foot finishing mower to mow my yard? It is for sale for $1800 I thought that was a fair price and in my budget.

Let me share my experience with a 1010 and mowers. When I bought my 1010 it ran very poorly. At the time I got it, I also got a five foot finishing mower. Despite the poor performance of the tractor, it could pull the mower through stuff the mower wouldn't cut. So my first point would be, be sure that if you plan to use a finishing mower, you really are doing finishing work and not trying to use it as a bush-hog as I was doing. The tractor would work for that but the mower would not.

I sold my finishing mower and bought a five foot J-D rotary mower. I was mowing pasture with it yesterday and today and will be using it again tomorrow. Some of the grasses are easily chest high on me. I am pulling the mower in third gear, but when I get to the really heavy and tall stuff, I have to go down to second. So my answer to your question would be, the 1010 will absolutely handle a six foot finishing mower used in a finishing environment.

If you buy the tractor (sounds like a good price to me, since I paid $2250) you might want to know that you can get points, condensor and rotor for it from your local NAPA store.

Josh

Forgive me for getting on the soap box but I don't think that tractors belong on my lawn - and my lot is 5+ acres. I know that there are a lot of people that own small JD's that don't make tracks on the lawn (he he), but my tractors always have and therefore, I have refused to let the 420 play on the lawn, even though it would have been cheaper than purchasing the Z turn lawn mower that I have. You will need another mower anyway, which you probably already have for the finish work. Just my two centagos and preferences - give it some thought. PS if that 1010 starts and runs in all gears and is not all beat up, I would buy it just to let it rest im my barn for that price. Have fun!

Hello Josh. My neighbor pulls a six foot finish mower with a 1953 john deere 40 tractor. He says it is about 20 horse power he was told. It does a good job never lets grass get over six inches tall between mowings. Archie
