I am picking up a Late styled A ser. 678 something. I know that some of these could be ordered with wider rear axles, but this one is really wide. I haven't had a chance to measure them, but compare them to this: my 1940 A has the wheels all the way out to the end with the hubs inside. This late A is already about 4" wider to each side than my 1940 and it still has an easy 4 or 6 plus inches on each side to go yet. I was told it came from a potatoe farm. Is this just a characteristic of late styled A's, or is it this way from a special order? I know it will not be anything rare, but still interesting to know. It just does not seem right that all a's came like this because there seems to be too many cases where if the wheels were in, the axles would stick out so darn far, it would cause a lot of problems. Someone give me a clue...thanks, AC

I'm not sure if it is special equipment or not but my 1949 A has very long axles like you have described. The axles on my 1944 A are much shorter.

Hey AC, these type questions are sort of out of my area, as I have like no specs concerning these things. However, I do know thay made and I once bought what I believed was a true "AW" which had the wider rear axles PLUS was equiped with a factory wide front end. It's not the same as the regular A which had even a JD brand wide front added, they have the narrow regular rear axles. Hopefully, someone with some specs n books can help you.

It must be tied in with an AW option. The tractor is a rollomatic front, but things change over the years. It would be interesting to know if it came with an adjustable front end originally. Does anyone know if there is a website where one can check his serial number? Thanks all, AC
