F.I.T.

I just finished reading your Interesting & Informative article Remove old paint with lye gravy in the June/2003 issue of Green Magazine! Sounds like I can substitute this concoction for the commercial spray-on variety that Ive been using. Is there any special procedure needed to neutralize the Phosphoric acid wash afterwards?

Dave:

You must get your GM early !

I let the Phosphoric Acid dry if I'm not going to use the part for a while, because that film helps protect the part. If I'm going to prime and paint right away, I often blast or scrub the surface off with clear water. You can just sand the dried on Phosphoric Acid residue and prime right over it. It doesn't need to be neutralized.

BTW, when you see "Self-Etching Primer" they put some Phosphoric Acid in the primer so it etches the metal as it dries. It also is converting any remaining red rust to black oxide.

I have another article in the hopper on another subject, but I think it might be coming out next month.
