I posted a couple of weeks ago about my steering on a 620 but I couldn't give many details because I did not have it home yet. It is power steering and wants to turn its own way whether I do it or not. Sometimes I can't stop it. When I do get it stopped it is locked up and will not turn unless I turn it hard in the direction it wants to go and then back real hard. Any advice. Also, the sediment bowl/automatic cutoff is damaged on the threads where it goes into the tank. I am using conventional sediment bowl and manual cutoff but would like to go back with the original. How can I find another one? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need a complete rebuild. starting with the steering cyl. ( pedistol) The wiper seals are worn and possibly one of the pins is broken and falls down causing it to lock.there is a bushing at the top that is worn out as well. Most likely the worm assembly is worn at the helix and this will cause it to want to turn by itself. This a is very expensive repair. while you are at it you might as well rebuild the pump ,replaceing the gears and sandwich, shaft etc. Some of the parts for the worm assy. are not available . I weld and grind as much as can on the helix. You best find a mechanic that is experienced with this steering as you have to know how to "set up " the helix . Hope this helps. DON

I had the same problem on an 820 after we did some rebuilding. If you send me your address, I will see if I can find an illustration. If there are not any other problems it is a relatively simple adjustment. Let me warn you I hire a mechanic for fitting pistons, and overhauling the PS, etc. I scrape the dirt and grease, take stuff apart and what ever else the mechanic assigns me. I did carry out this adjustment. I have the service manual for the 820, but I don't think it includes much on PS. The Service and Parts manuals manuals are a real God-Send for novices such as myself. The JD manuals (1-800-522-7448) are much more detailed than the IT manuals.
