I'm new at reconditioning tractors so I can't
figure out what I did wrong. I've got a John
Deere 60 that needed new batteries. I put them
in the way the old ones were I think, now I don't
have power to the starter. Could I have it wrong? I've got pos ground and neg to neg. Thanks.

Chuck, you are only slightly wrong. ~Positive on the 1st battery goes to ground, the negative on THAT battery hooks to the positive on the second [other] battery, the negative on the second battery hooks to the big battery cable going to the starter. That's assuming a positive ground tractor [your tractor came as positive ground from the factory but some have been converted to negative ground over the years].
~If your original battery set-up had the positive of the first battery going to ground then wire per above..
