How ya doin? I have a log splitter that I just mounted on my 50 and it works great. I had it on my Farmall 400 and the cam gear broke from the strain of the hydraulic pump, I imagine from splitting so much wood. I noticed that the 50 pump is also run by the cam gear. Do you think this will eventually do something to my 50 also? I have never heard of JD having a problem in this area but have heard of this problem with Farmalls. I just need some opinions to help me decide what to do. I guess I should go to a PTO pump for the splitter. Thanks for your thoughts.

Dear Elmer-at-work: My favorite wood splitter pump is the PRINCE which slides over the pto shaft. That will be a much kinder and gentler way to harness the horses in that 50.

Fudd@work, I'm doing great, busy as a hill of ants though.
~On your hydraulic pump. That is a pretty robust pump set up on that 50 but isn't meant for continuous duty. It will split a lot of wood before trouble develops so it would depend on how much you plan on using it. If you are going to put lots of continuous hours on the hydraulics it might be cheaper in the long run to use a PTO powered pump. You will get more done also as a PTO pump will put out a lot more GPM....
