How do you tell the difference between an LA and a late L (no serial numbers)?

Also, How do you remove the front axle? Do you have to torch the welds on the rear carrier (bolster) and remove it? It doesn't apear to have a center pivot pin..just fore and aft stub shafts that are made onto the axle. Hmmmmm.....I probably should get a book. Any help on this one appreciated!

Remove the caps and bearings on each end of the center pivots, slide the rear inner collar forward toward the center of the axle. Push the axle thru the rear support until the front pivot pin can drop out of front support and is below the front support, push axle forward until rear pivot pin drops out of rear support.
