I have a John Deere 345 L&G tractor.
As i get older I find my reflexes appear to be slowing down as I hit a good size rock before I could stop. Now the engine has a miss when under a load. Does this thing have a shear key like a small push mower that could cause my problem?
Any help would be appreciated as I would hate to have to pay J.D. to repair it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Danny,
I've got a JD 425 with a sushi soul. The Kawasaki 620 in mine has a crank triggered electronic ignition, an ignitor box, and two coils.

If that's similar to yours, I'd guess the same thing that Mikey G was alluding to -- the jolt of hitting the rock could have changed the crank trigger sensors enough to cause the miss. The whole thing is not an easy system to troubleshoot without a good O'scope, and on mine you have to pull the radiator to even start to get to it -- so good luck if you decide to do it yourself.

I have a 5 year old #345 with 250 hours and 54" mower deck..great mower..lousy eng. The Kawasaki has plastic cam parts that wear...causing misfiring and other problems. I was told this is a problem with this particular eng. Many parts were replaced but I continue to have problems...mechanic blames bad gas. I suspect I have a lemon. I've been happy with my other JD's.. this #345 is my first headache. Anyone else having this problem with the Kawasaki in the #345?

i am not shure about the key but i do no that the drive gear on the cam shaft is plastic. They do break. IF nothing else pull the valve covers off and crank the engine over and see if the valves are moving.

Danny If my memory is correct(about 50%) your motor is timed internaly with a external pickup I dont recall if it had a flywheel key or not even so a impact to a mower would be isolated from it motor by the drive system ( belt or hydrolic) and should not damage it . If you find more symptoms post again and I will try to help.
