Last night my son and I widen the front axel on the 3020 we recently bought. The problem we have is the sleeve that the rod goes in to is froze. We got the rod to slide out but we need more adjustment and the sleeve won't slide out of the steering rod tube We tried useing a jack to spread it but no luck. This early model 3020. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you can get it completly off the tractor you might try soaking it in PB Blaster or another penetrating oil to loosen it up. You could try heating it a little but I wouldn't want to get it very hot. sometimes just the smallest amount of heat will work wonders. I have a 64 model 3020. You are talking about the tie rods between the steerin knuckle and the center steering plate aren't ya?

In my opinion (I've fought a few of those on 4840s, 4955s and the like), you're better off to leave the the tie rod connected to the steering arm in the center while trying to get the rod end to slide. You'll play heck keeping the tube from turning in a vise while twisting the rod end to break it free. Unhook the rods at the spindles, apply liberal amounts of heat to the tube (you don't really have to worry about damaging the tubes - they're pretty tough), and use a pipe wrench to turn the rod end, while smacking the tube along the outside. Shooting some penetrant down the tube after it has cooled some will also help. Take it completely apart, clean the bore in the tube, and wire brush the tie rod end. Reassemble with a bunch anti-sieze compound to prevent this problem in the future. If they're badly stuck, you'll spend a bunch of time trying to free them up by just slightly heating and using penetrating oil. Been there and done that, and that is one place where getting a little nasty will yield far better results. I've seen some on big tractors that hadn't ever been moved. I would have swore that it would have taken the best part of a day to free them up, but by using the above method, I had them moved in less than a hour or so.

G-MAN you're right about those models you mentioned! I had one stuck with a 10 ton portapower and alot of heat, and still fought for awhile. Fought it all the way to the end of the tube and the portapower squealed all the way. chris
