I am rebuilding the generator on a early 50 JD. The tape on the field coils is falling off on one side. Is there any way to retape these?
Thank you Aaron

I just asked one of the local rebuilders about taping up your field windings. He has the tape in stock. However he said he usually only does that on stuff he can't get parts for. By the time he figures in the labor to tape the windings it's the same cost or less to just install new field windings. A JD 50 tractor should have a Delco-Remy generator and windings should be readily available at your local rebuilder. Your rebuilder will have the tools to remove and install the windings.

Craig is right, special tool required to remove field magnet assembly which also hold field coil by gripping - the tape. Don't worry about it if this is a work horse, but if its a full restoration job then you'll have to throw money at it.

I already have it apart. John Deere said they could not get new field coils. We do have a local guy who works on them, but my dad wants me to learn how to work on it.
Thanks Aaron

OK, understood. You know you are in the rare %5 who never go there themseleves don't you? In your case then, rewrap with anything of like kind, texture and color and put it back together - yes, you _can_ re-wrap them. Maybe the local guy will have some tape to wrap with? Good luck, Aaron.

Good question. I remember being in a starter/alternator/generator repair place in a large town and seeing one of the guys wraping white cloth tape around a field winding that was out of the generator. I'd check at a local rebuilder if you have one. There are a couple small rebuilders near me but I've never seen them do anything like that. I'll be traveling by one of them tomorrow and I'll stop and ask.
If yours can be repaired it would need to be removed from the field frame but that requires special tools. Once you take the old winding out you might as well install new ones while you are at it. The labor to reinstall the old one or a new one is the same.
