Electrical [generator] question

Gentlemen,

What are the correct steps for polarizing your generator? I have the MT, with an original Delco Rem. generator and the original cut-out-relay [all new wiring, new JD ammeter and rebuild ign switch]. For some reason(s), I can not get the [new] JD ammeter to register any voltage flow.

Finally, any time you disconnect the battery, do you have to re-polarize, or is is when you disconnect the A & F wires from the generator or both? Basically, just need to know when to polarize...thank you in advance.

Tom, that MT uses a headlight switch controlled generator field so the easiest way to polarize it is to ground the generator [F] post {smaller of the two} to the generator housing [you need a good clean ground], then monetarily jump battery power from the starter's big battery cable stud to the generator's [A] post {larger of the two}. You should get a spark & that tells you it is polarized.

~On your charging issue...If the polarization doesn't get it charging make sure the ammeter is wired correctly. There should ONLY be one wire hooked to the battery side post of the ammeter & ALL OTHER LOADS including the battery wire from the cut-out relay should be hooked to the other post of the ammeter. If it shows a reverse reading when done just reverse the wires from side to side..

~If it still doesnt charge, start at the ammeter side of the cut-out relay & MAKE SURE you have battery power to that terminal [if you dont find out why]. If you have battery power there then start the tractor & run at fast idle. Then ground the [F] post on the generator [does it charge now?]..If so, you have a failed ground at the headlight switch, or a bad headlight switch, or an open in the wire from the generator [F] post to the headlight switch, or a bad generator.

~If still no charge, leave the [F] post grounded & then jump the [A] post on the generator to the ammeter side of the cut-out relay, [does it charge now?]..If so you have a bad cut-out relay, or an open in the wire from the generator [A] post to the cut-out relay, or a failed generator.

~If all the above doesn't find the problem MAKE SURE the generator & cut-out relay have a good CLEAN ground.

~If it still doesnt charge you probably have a failed generator, or possibly a stuck brush or improperly adjusted 3rd brush

Tom, are you the same Tom we have helped with an MT here a while back??? Since I just this very minute completed my article on Generator Troubleshooting, I will just e mail it to you to save time and its way too long to post here anyway. It will tell you more than you ever wanted to know lol about generator problems.

Good Luck n God Bless

Tom,
You will have to repolarize after major work or when you end up geting everything grounded out usually. There is normally enough residual magnetisim left that maintains the correct polarity. However it does occur that if let set for a period of time polarity can be lost.... Doesn't mater

You need to take a jumper from your hot post on your battery ( the one that is not the ground going to the frame).... To the armature post it is marked with an A usually the bigger terminal. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT POST!! it will likely spark and you are ready to go. you are polarized. The wire goig to your regulator from the tractors harness should always be hot ( it comes from the ammeter) can be used and you can jump it from there to the (A) armature terminal on the regulator

WJW,

Thanks for the reply...did you mean generator and not "regulator" in your last sentence?

When I take the jumper wire from the hot post on the battery to the (A) armature post, should the harness wires to either one or both posts (A) &/or (F) to the generator be disconneted? Thanks

tom,
I am guessing that john has e mailed his article, however;
You do not have to change any wiring at all, leave it hooked up.

And if you look at it node wise, the regulator ARM (A) terminal is the same point as the post on the generator. I think that the gen. post is easier to reach. good luck!!

I just take a wooden stick and hold the cut out points, not the field points together for a second. Job done and no confusion. If the belt is slacked off the generator should motor over too. If not it's faulty. Should run slower/less current with the field cicuit closed and faster when open.
