Yesterday I was diving my JD D picking up stick when it sounded like it started to run of one cylinder. after a short while of that the tractor just quit. I went back to what clooney said on how to check the time, it was unbelivable were the L/H impluse writing was. It was on the opposite side of the mark(At 9 o'clock). If either of you could please tell me step by step how to fix the timing to the proper stettings

Thanks
Daniel

Daniel, are you still working on that 50 D? If so it should have a Wico XH 477 mag. That mag will snap twice for each full flywheel revolution so it should snap as the L/H impulse mark lines up with the case mark & again when the L/H impulse is at 9 o'clock [straight forward]. BUT, it should only produce a spark on the L/H [flywheel side] with the L/H impulse at the rear [3 o'clock].... It should only produce a spark on the R/H side when the L/H impulse is straight forward [9 o'clock].
~Now on why it quit running? Maybe you fouled the spark plugs again, Try cleaning, or replacing them again. It sounded from your post from a few days ago that your mag might be a little weak & if that is the case the spark plugs will foul easily. Were the spark plugs wet after it quit? Next time it quits try using that spark plug with the 3/16" gap to test to see if you are still getting a spark that will jump that 3/16" gap. ~Do the fuel flow test at the carb drain cock again to see if it still has a good fuel flow. [maybe something is plugging up after it runs for a while]
~If you suspect the mag again you might have to pull it apart & clean it up inside & check the shaft bushings. That XH mag is a pretty hardy mag but rust, moisture, & wear can lower it's output.

Hey Dan, that sucks dont it, sounds like your day wanst much better than mine. I bought an Economy brand lawn tractor at an auction last night (as is where is, no running or testimonials) and worked on her some and got it going but couldnt get it to mow, even though the blades were low and turning. Turned out someone had jury rigged the wrong deck on it and teh blades were turning abckwards. Im gonna remedy that after this post however, it needs a belt twist (reverses deck spin) like some of the IH type Belly Mowers.

TIMING PROCEDURE

When the left (flywheel side) hand cylinder is at TDC on its compression power stroke, the Left Hand Impulse mark on the flywheel should be at 3 o clock in line with the mark on the tractor (assuming the flywheel and cam to crank and governor are in time) and the mag should snap to fire the left cylinder (leading cap terminal) and then 180 later, (LH Impulse at 9 o clock) it again snaps and fires the right cylinder at TDC on its power stroke.

Now, if its a Wico C or XH mag, they fire at BOTH Power and Exhaust TDC's, and if they are installed just 180 out of time, simply reversing the plug wires makes them run. On those, the LH Impulse is at 3 o clock lined up at TDC on the exhaust stroke causing firing also. However, if its a different mag, if they are 180 out, you cant reverse the wires to get them right.

So, are you sure of what cylinder is at what TDC (power or exhaust) when you mentioned the 9 o clock in your question??? At 9 o clock (180 after 3 o clock), she should be firing the Right hand cylinder at its TDC power stroke.

Is this a base mount mag??? (Sorry, Im not a D man, dont know what mags what years etc, clooney is a D man though) If it were timed right per above and ran good, but now is 180 out, you might look at the mag coupler, cuz its bolts are loosened and that is how you time them as compared to a governor end mounted mag where you loosen its bolts and rotate it.

Look at its present timing (be sure what cylinder and what TDC its on when) and look at the coupler if a base mount, and set and lock it per the above timing (which is right, regardless) and let us know what you find out.

Good Luck, John T
