OK, I know that this has nothing to do with tractors, but I know that there are some very knowledgable folks who post here. So here goes: The victim is a low-hour '78 Mercruiser 120 outdrive. I was at the lake with the family this weekend. For some stange reason something let loose while we were cruising along at a steady speed. It was like a clutch going out on a truck. There was a hint of burning rubber in the air. I was able to idle back to the boat ramp but it would slip if the rpms went above that. Reverse slips just the same. I thought that the propeller hub might have slipped but I can turn the engine over with the prop. I even tried my spare prop out and it does the same thing. The shifter has been a little stiff -- but when I checked out the bottom end the gears and shift fork look like new. Is there another rubber bushed coupler in there somewhere?
