Nothing runs like a Deere, especially my A

Just got another A, has a newer carb, hot mag, and new plugs. It sounds ok under a load, but sounds sick at idle or up to half throttle. The idle quality, is GREAT, it will sit down and just barely run, but instead of making the traditional JD "glug" "glug" "glug", it idles kinda like "glug" "glug" "huff" "huff" "huff" "glug"
I don't know how else to explain it. I have messed around with enough tractors to realize that something is wrong, but not enought to know if this is acceptable. Changing the idle and load needles will affect power and idle quality, but will not affect the annoying exhaust note. All I can figure is that it MUST be some little adjustment. It has good fuel, and plenty of it, so I am getting a little confused, or scared. Not sure which...Any commentary would be appreciated....AC

AC, with all those new parts & hot mag you sure don't have a good baseline to start from.
~Probably the place to start is to pull the valve cover & make sure the valves aren't adjusted too tight. After the valves are set correctly use the L/H ex open on the flywheel & see if the L/H exhaust valve starts to open [0 lash] as the L/H ex open on the flywheel lines up with [or within 1"] of the case mark [at 3 o'clock behind the flywheel]. If the valve lash is correct & the cam timing is correct you might have low compression [do a hot compression test]. If nothing found so far look for a mag starting retard [lag angle] problem that's effecting the running timing.... Let us know what mag you have & we can tell you how to set the lag angle. The mag type & even the impulse cup makes a difference on that lag angle setting so we need to know what you have....
~To see if the mag timing is causing your problem you might want to mark the mag to the governor position [so you can put it back] then loosen the mag retaining bolts & rotate the top of the mag forward a little to retard the spark, then rearward to advance the spark to see if changing the base timing makes it sound better....
