We have got a 1945 model A, John Deere, S/N. 550301. It has the wrong spark plugs fitted and has a Lucas mag. Can someone please tell me what is the correct spark plugs for this tractor, and also the right magneto. Best wishes, Peter H.

Peter,
Your 1945 A came with a Wico C1042 magneto - quite common here, no problem to find. Your A came from the factory with either Champion 8Com-C (not 8Com), or Edison-Splitdorf Z-19 plugs. Both were 2-piece take-apart plugs, and neither is real easy to find in NOS. If you are not using your tractor for heavy field work, I would go to the hottest plug available - a Champion D23, AC C88L, or Autolite 388. Also make sure your plug wires have a copper core, and not carbon fiber.

Peter, You can get plenty of opinions on what spark plugs to use, but I have best luck with Autolite 388 on most styled JD's like A's etc. I'm not sure what mag came out on that particular tractor as I have no spec books, but the Wico Model XH is a good one as far as parts, reasonable price and availability are concerned, or else the older Wico Model C, but the XH is later and may develop slightly more spark. energy. Some of the Fairbanks fit, work and look great, but the parts and availability and pricing is not as good as if you go with the more common used Wicos. The mags mounting coupler has to fit your governor and drive slot and depth, but you should be able to compare it with the one you now have for mounting compatibility.

As far as timing any new Mag, just remember the left hand (flywheel side) cylinder fires first (top terminal on the Wico's was used original) at TDC on its compression power stroke just when the Left Hand Impulse mark on the flywheel is at 3 o clock in line with the mark on the side of tractor, and then the right cylinder fires 180 degrees later on its power TDC stroke. If the flywheel and cam to crank and cam to governor gears are in correct time, the governors female cog drive slot (that drives mag, turns same direction and RPM as mag) should be flat horizontal when that Left Hand Impulse and Flywheel mark is at 3 o clock as described above. If shes installed 180 out, reversing the top n botom plug wires would make her run.

If the Lucas mag works, why change it????? ?

Best Wishes, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana USA
