Hi I am looking for some ideas on what to do. Right now I have a 1958 720 diesel pony start and would like to help out with our farm more. So to do that I need electric start and three point. My 720 has niether. Should I A: spend $900 to convert to electric and $450 for an aftermarket three point, or B: buy a 3020/3010 that already has these? Are 3010/3020 any good? We have a 4020 and are very happy with its performance but I dont know about the 3010/3020s. Are there any better years to buy than others? I would like one with a three point, dual hydraulics, diesel, and i like the wide front but not necessary. What would my 720 be worth? Its a 1958 with single hydraulics, power steering, fenders, nf, diesel pony start, with good back tires and new back rims. What is this worth? What is a good 3010/3020 worth? Thanks.

Matt

the 720 diesel was a true iron horse in it's day.don't get the electric start conversion.it's expensive and not original .if you are having a few problems getting your pony started quickly, you might want to get a pony motor distributor kit. Get an aftermarket 3point .a 3010 or 3020 would be expensive$ plus your 720 has a little more hp than a 3010. your 720 will use about 1/2 the fuel a 3010 or 3020 will use.overall, stick with the 720!good luck deciding! if you want to know a little more about the 720,order the oct.2002 back issue of green magazine.it has some good history and some unique insight on the 720.

If I recall the specs correctly, diesel to diesel, from factory settings the 3010D has 1 hp more than the 720D (59 for 3010D and 58 for 720D).

As to pulling capability, there is no doubt the 720 would out do the 3010D just from weight difference alone. I know the 730D was over 7000# and the 3010D is 6000#. Even if they were equal weight I believe the torque output of the 720D is way above the 3010.

And fuel economy wise, the 720D will probably beat anything out there.

But as to ease of use, the 3010 or 3020s are a lot better. They are also more likely to be able to handle the new equipment as long as it isn't too sophisticated or requires higher hydraulic pressures than 2200psi.

a 3010 or 3020 would be easier to use and more adaptable to modern equipment as you said, but it depends on whether or not somebody would want to give the money for one.for light to medium farm and utility work, the 720 would be more economical. i have magazine that lists the 720d at 53.66hp at the drawbar and 58.84 at the belt.these were Nebraska tests.a book of mine has has a picture of a original jd 10 series brochure and it lists the 3010 diesel at 55hp.when you said the 3010 was 59hp,were you talking about Nebraska tests or factory ratings?

Matt,

If you plan on using a tractor for your farming operation today....there is no question which tractor series is more productive. The 3010/3020 will run circles around the 720. It has much better hydraulics, better power steering, more gear speed options, better handling, and most of all a foot clutch.

Now, I'm not saying that the 720 is not a good tractor. I've a 720 gasoline tractor that I absolutely love. And to tell you the truth, it will pull our 3010 Diesel around the block. But, for the day-in-day-out convienence and less maintainence I would go with the 3010 or 3020. We have a 1963 3010. It has a reman later model 3020 motor so it is a bit more peppy than the stock 3010. I would definately go with the diesel version as they are much more powerful and pain free.

I would guess your 720 could be worth anywhere from $2000 to $3500 depending upon overall condition. A good 3010 will cost slightly less than the 3020 because of it being made less years and not as big of popularity. I know that the 3010's were not available with the differential lock that your 4020 probably has. Either model 3010 or 3020 should perform wonderful. If you just love that diesel two-cylinder sound then keep your 720. Even with your electric start conversion and 3point it will still be cheaper than a good 3020. You could easily spend $6500 on a 3010/3020 diesel in good shape. If you can find one with rough tires and rims you could swap them from your 720.

Good luck in your decision. Either way, both are good machines that will work for years and years provided that proper maintainence has been followed.
