49 B starter won't engage

It started fine 3 times this afternoon. Then I removed the carb to look for cause of missing & low power. I did not fix that problem but now it does not even spin the starter. I charged the battery up completely & cleaned the battery terminals.

I had this problem last spring also. I tore off the starter back then and replaced the spring loaded contact on the starter. Worked fine until now. I can't believe I've worn out the new switch already. Is there an adjustment to get the starter button to push that contact further to engage it completely?

I'm nearly ready to sell the old babe. I don't have the time to play with it every time I want to use it. LEt me know if you can help me out.

Thanks

Ray

Spring loaded contact? You mean the switch that the lever pushes on when you stomp on the starter rod? Did you check or notice the contact that is on the starter itself? The one you can see after you remove the switch assembly? It could be worn out or burned away. I just had the starter apart on my 1950 B. It was working fine but I never had it off during the 7 years I owned the tractor and wanted to check its condition. someone had already put a new switch on it and the contact on the starter was good. The starter switch contacts made contact well before the the pinion gear and lever reached its end of travel. If your starter switch contacts are excessively worn then the pinion gear will reach end of travel before the contacts make contact.

The first thing to do is attach your ground from battery to one of the ears on the starter. This eliminates loose electrical connections. The old tractors have several mechanical joints bolted together and get full of rust.

Ray, ~First make sure all the battery cable connections are clean & tight. Look for dark gray or black at the cable connections as that is a sign of a poor connection.
~If the cable connections are tight & clean & the battery is in good condition & charged you probably have a problem with the starter switch again, or a failed starter & will have to pull the starter & clean the contacts & look for stuck or worn brushes in the starter.
~You can try adjusting the starter button rod but as long as the bendix lever is fully depressing the switch button there isn't much for an adjustment....

Ray,

Sounds like the starter either needs lubed or the (gear assembly) is completely bad. Can't remember the proper name for it this morning!!

Hope this helps

Sam
