John,
First, welcome to the world of John Deere antique tractor collecting! If you only have half the enjoyment it has brought me the past 30 years, you will have a ball.

The JD A and B can be divided into three classes - "unstyled", 1934-1938, "early styled", 1939-1946, "late styled" 1947-1952. The unstyled tractors have no grill screens, so the open vertical steering post is evident. In the next group the post is covered by grill screens, electric start was optional, a pan seat was used, minimal hydraulics available, etc. The "late styled" had electric lights and starting, a square seat with a cushion, better hydraulics, and more power. The early styled tractors are probably the cheapest of the bunch at present, and parts are readily available.

Good Luck with your hunt for a John Deere, and keep us posted - help is readily available for questions on this site.

John, Ballpark figures on the A. Weight-5000, Drawbar H.P.34, PTO 38. Some people haul them on 16 ft. trailors with 1/2 ton truck. Check weight limits for truck and trailor. You will need to move wheels in if they are not already. Need breaks on trailor also. Give us serial no. and we can give better advice.

John,

There is a lot of information at this site:

It is hard to answer your question without knowing what year and style your "A" is.
