Getting grandpa's b running...the continuing saga.

On my grandpa's 1941 B..from having no spark (magneto problems) ....to having crazy high RPM's...(thank you Clooney, it was the head of cotter pin on throttle linkage hitting the carb body).

We now have a problem of it running/idleing really rough. If we let it sit and idle a little while, it will straighten out and run really nice, and then go back to running poorly again. We are GUESSING that we are flooding out the engine with gas. Either the jet adjustments are off OR the float is too high????

We have a schable (spelling is bad I'm sure) DLTX 38 (looked like, quit dirty on lettering). There are 2 large L handles for adjusting the jets on top of carb. One says idle jet and the other says load jet. There are some small, brass slot headed screws near the L shaped jets. When we had the carb gone through, the mechanic said to adjust the L shaped handles 2 full turns out. We've played with idle jet (I'm assuming it's the L shaped adjuster) turning it 1 full turn out, 1 1/2 full turn out and 1 3/4 turn out, none seemed to do much good. It seems to backfire sometimes, we tried reversing the magneto wires, but it backfired just turning it over by hand, so we put wires back the way they were.

Where do we go from here??? Thanks for all the help. If we had tom pay a dealer to do all this work, I know we couldn't afford to do the job of getting it running, then it would be just another rusty hulk in another fence line. Thanks for all the help!!!!! !!!

I've got to go and try to plant some soybeans, we've been so wet we haven't been in the field for almost a month. S MN.

My 1948 A does this too. Will sit and idle nice for a few min then RPM's pick up for a min and then drops back to idle. Does not concern me any. I suspect however maybe a clogged idle passage in the carb is causing it. My needle valve settings are 2 1/2 turns open for the fast idle (full throttle) and 1 1/2 for the idle. I think it is a pretty individual thing exactly where they go. I know the idle setting also effects the fast idle performance. I set mine up in the field testing changes under load.

I tried numerous positions for the Idle and Load adjusters. I would like to know if they interact with each other. I guess I'll go try baccking them out 2 turns and see what happens. I screwed them in most of the way and it started backfiring.

JD dealer told me they don't even sell rebuilt or new carbs. I can't believe someone doesn't do this as a side job. Do any of you know someone in Iowa who does this service?

Yes the mixture screws do interact somewhat. A too lean idle can be corrected a little by opening the load screw a little for example. Best test I've come up with for being sure your passages are working is to close the screws one at a time. You should be able to kill the tractor doing so. If not, then there is some passage somewhere that needs a wire run though it to clear it out. Opposite is also true, you should be able to make her smoke (black) by opening either screw.

I'm in southwest Iowa and I would highly recommend Bob Serlet in Omaha Ne He runs an auto repair shop and is an old 2 cylinder nut. Extremely professional work and super friendly good people to deal with. Phone number 402 390 9413 or see his good stuff on ebay under c.serlet Can't say enough good things....

Ray,
There are many places to have your carb rebuilt, some good, some not so good. A very good one in Iowa is Robert's Carb Repair in Spencer, IA. Check them out at www.robertscarbrepair.com. This is their business, and they have had many parts made that are no longer available from JD.

JD servicemen have started, worked a career, and retired since 2-cyl carbs were common, so there is no longer much expertise (in general) at the dealers.

I had my B carb rebuilt at Earlandson's (JD dealer) in Kiester MN. ..south central MN, 3 miles from the IA line. Don't know how good job they did, still having problems getting it to run right. Look's like they did OK. I'm sure that I have other problems??? 1-888-917-5087 Just got the bill today and it cost me $170. Tell them that Dave Kluender sent you (won't help get it cheaper, in fact, might cost more!)
