'51 A Clutch

I have a '51 "A" with a clutch that growls when disengaged, while also catching enough friction material to turn pulley constantly. When engaging under load, it begins to bang & jump, but once engaged, doesn't slip or make any racket. The drive disc is tight on crank, as there is no fore or aft movement when engine is stopped & clutch is engaged. I have a new set of friction discs to put in, but I was wondering if there is anything else I should pay particular attention to when looking at it. Thanks

Jack, with the clutch disengaged, grab the clutch pulley & try to lift it up & down. If you are getting more than just a slight movement, your clutch pulley bearing, or inner bushing needs replacing.
~If the bearing feels tight then your problem is more than likely glazed lined clutch disks and/or rust in the clutch pulley & clutch plates. ~It wouldn't hurt to remove the clutch pulley & repack the bearing with high temp grease. Also clean the oil return holes in the pulley hub & grease the ends of the toggles.
