Maybe some of you can help me out, i found a 41 JD B for sale. According to the previous owner that traded it in, the only thing it needs is plug wires and a couple wires to the voltage regulator to get it running, the dealorship put new plug wires on it, so i tried to start it but nothing. its in pretty good shape, needs a few things done to it, esp front tires. they want 1200 for it, i just don't know whether to buy it or not, i've never owned a 2 cylinder, always wanted one and they are pretty scarce here in the mountains. It could be somethin' bigger than the guy said or just be a bad connection.

Thanks
mitch

i would ask the dealer to get it running before you buy it. the only problem there is alot of dealers dont have anyone that knows anything about the 2 cylinders anymore. our local dealers have several times sent tractors to us to work on because they just dont have anyone that knows anything. johndeeregene

Mitch, I'm with Sam. If the dealer don't have it running something smells here. If he won't start and let you drive it I would look elsewhere. Like Scruffy said, starting and running can be only part of the trouble.

How much work and money are you wanting to put into it to get it running? My 70 (that was my grandfathers) hadn't run for many many years. Getting it running was the easy part. Since then I've found almost everything with this tractor needs something done with it... Hydralics leaking, flywheel won't stay tight, loose clutch driver disk, etc, etc, etc.

It's a gamble though. I had a friend that bought a JD A without hearing it run. After he started working on it he found that the crankcase and cylinders were completely full of water (no can on muffler). He drained it and let it dry out, said he sprayed wd40 into the cylinders to get rid of the water and rust, and the next day started it up and it's worked fine ever since (smokes a little though). He bought the tractor for $500.

So you have to ask yourself, are you a gambler???

Thanks,
scruf

For 1200.00 I would make the dealer get it to run first!

Just My Opinion

Keep WD-40 away from your crankcase. Oil will never stick to surfaces again!! You will always burn oil after that. 1200 dollars if they get it running and keep it running for a while is not bad. You will need to listen to the trans, check the steering for excess play. With the engine not running, engage the clutch and lift the pulley and rock the pulley back and forth checking for excessive play. With it running, also check out the power lift to see if it works. That's some things to check. Some are cheap to repair, some are not. Good luck.
