I am wondering about the wisdom of having 38 inch tires vs the standard 34 inch on a 3020? I have 38's. wishing I had 34's...its a longer step to the ground. Why did the former owner put on the 38's?? The tires seem too big for the axles...is this set up harder on the transmission etc? also it seems to me this tractor is awfully "jumpy"...i.e. wants to rare up like a wild stallion. The wheel width is set narrow. I am going to move to wider position hoping this will settle the thing down a bit?

Most 3020's I've seen including my '64 Diesel Powershift came with 15.5x38's originally . I put 16.9x38's on a couple years back , worked out real good , raised the drawbar to a more standard heighth , a little higher to climb on , but I like it . Original rims are 14 in. they recomend a 15 in. for the 16.9 tire but they work good on the 14's . I have the oem widefront and run 10X16's on it gets it level , looks real good . If you have the roll-o-matic front you can't put bigger tires on and it will be low in front .
I have a 148 loader on mine and it makes a nice outfit . Just my $.02 worth , Jim

34" but how wide. We have 15.5X38 on one tractor and 18.4X34 on the other tractor. Parked side by side the 18.4X34 are higher. In use there isn't much differance. 18.4X34 are a little faster, but not that noticeable except in roar gear when they both are going down the road one after the other. We just hay but if we had row crops, I would the 15.5X38's.

One thing I forgot was is it worth the cost. Castings will maybe run $400 apiece plus shipping or a road trip. New after market rims will run about $200 apiece and $800 for new tires tubes and mounting. That tops $2000. Can you sell your old stuff right away or have to sit on them for a while. What would you gain? Is it worth the extra cost?

I would look into the clutch for your "jumpy" problem. Back when I was farming I had two 3020's one had 38 wheels [68] and the other had 34 in.[64]. They were both in daily use and I noticed only slight differnces between them. The 38 in. wheels gave slightly better traction. I prefered that one for heavy pulling and baling with kicker wagon. You might note from my "handle" that I live in the Catskill mts. so we take traction when baling very seriously around here. The one with 34 in. wheels I prefered for mowing, slightly better handling. However I will agree about the step height concern with the taller wheels, didn't seem like much difference in the morning. But by late afternoon it seemed like I needed an extra step or a ladder.

We have two 3020 diesel with powershift. At one time had 3020 gas with synco trans. All three tractors had 15.5 X 38 rubber. We put 16.9X38 rubber on them to raise the drawbar higher off the ground. We really like them. One has over 12000hr and other don't know how many hr.

Is that clutch worn to the metal or has been replaced with something with a very grippy friction material? My 435's clutch has to be feathered careful or the tires tear up the dirt. The front is so heavy she doesn't come up. Installed an oversize clutch disk with racing friction surfaces. No slippage when pulling. The 3020 rowcrop wide front we had wore 34" tires but it felt high centered and tippy on hills. Front needed ballast on it too. Get them tires widened out to at least the axle ends for stability. Less damage if something gets rubbed parking in the shed too. Good starting tractor in the winter with the 24V electrics however. Wouldn't mind a standard chassis 3020 now.
