Can someone tell me the compression specs for my 520 LP. I can't seem to find my LP Service Manual at the moment. Thanks

Also, what is the maximum safe variance between cylinders. Thanks again

Tyler, 200 psi, hot, carb & choke wide open & at cranking speed.
~I can't tell you "what is the maximum safe variance between cylinders" but a 10 psi variance between sides is considered about max before engine performance discrepancies are observed..

Clooney,

I suppose that you mean the choke lever should be pushed in like normal operating condition and the throttle lever all the way foreward. One thing is...should the LP gas be turned on. Will this affect the PSI reading? I would imagine that the LP gas will expand faster and compress differently than the ambient air.

Also, do you know if it is common in LP's for the exhaust valves to be leaky? Mine seems to "spit" sometimes and idles and runs somewhat inconsistantly. I have revamped the ignition and fuel delivery systems so I think that they can be somewhat ruled out. I have the sneaking suspision that the exhaust valves could be leaking and the hardened valve seats worn.

The funny thing is...this 520LP has more power than a 530 gas that I had and it had 125psi in each cylinder. My 520 has 125 in the LH and 135 in the RH but seems to have plenty of power. It will take off in 6th gear, clutch properly adjusted, at idle speed and just go.

I did however have the throttle at idle position and the fuel valve off when I tested compression.

Please let me know your ideas as you get time. I understand how much mail you receive. Sometimes I envy you and then when I'm busy....pitty you.

Thanks Always!

The LP may as well be valved off for the compression check. Safer too. Take both plugs out while doing the compression test, throttle and choke plates fully open. Check the valve lash. Worn rocker arm tips make a feeler gauge's reading invalid. With the desired cylinder at TDC compression , tighten the lash until the push rod cannot be turned by hand. Loosen about 1-1/4 flats on the nut. Try the old squirt of oil in the cylinder trick. While it works better on vertical engines , it will still raise the compression readings on an engine with worn rings/bores. Of course than a few cams out there are worn and the intrepid rebuilder replaces everything but, and wonders why the engine isn't "right". Oversize all fuel intake valves will fit in the LP and perk her up even more.
