Dear Clooney,

Its Daniel with the 1950 D and I was have problems with black spark plugs, and not starting. You replied to my last message with a list of things to check. I did the one that I could do in the field.I will probably get the hotter spark plugs like you said. Is there any way to check if i have the right spark plug wires? Mine look to be too long. Is there something I could look for to tell the difference?
I checked the mag and I'm getting a good snap from it but when it happens the mark on the flywheel is about 1cm below the mark. I haven't tryed to check if the spark plug jumps a 3/16" gap yet but I'm going to. I can't do a compreesion check because I don't have the psi gauge that will fit the spark plug hole. I pulled of the big cup at the bottom of the air cleaner and it was half full of oil. what do you mean by the upper and lower mesh elments?? The carb choke plat is not bent and I don't think that there is any dirt or rust in it because the guy I bought if off of(end of November)cleaned the hole carb before I brougt it home. Its an electric start so I didn't open the petcocks. when you say I might have restriced intake system or worn ringswhat do you mean??? Could you explain it in more detail please. When I shut off the tractor I idle it down then turn off the fuel flow and let the carb run out of gas.

Thanks Daniel

Daniel, you ask...
1)-"Is there any way to check if I have the right spark plug wires? Mine look to be too long. Is there something I could look for to tell the difference?",,,well maybe yes, depends. The solid core wires will have actual multi strand wire sticking out both ends at the terminals. Carbon core wires will have either a piece of carbon impregnated string like material sticking out or a single thicker wire [no multi strand]. If you have an ohm meter you will have resistance of over 5K ohms if the wires are carbon core resistor.
2)-"I pulled of the big cup at the bottom of the air cleaner and it was half full of oil. what do you mean by the upper and lower mesh elements?",,,the actual air cleaner can [the big metal can] has a wire mesh inside it [non removable] & that mesh can plug with dirt & crud, the intake pipe above the air cleaner can also plug with dirt at the top or in the pipe [I have seen those pipes restricted to less than an inch inside].
3)- "When you say I might have restricted intake system or worn rings what do you mean?",,, on the restricted intake I was referring to plugging of the air cleaner or intake pipe, [run the tractor without the air cleaner hooked up to see if it runs better]...On the rings, if the piston rings are worn your compression will be low & that can cause hard starting, oil burning, poor combustion, poor idling, & general poor running. A compression test will tell you a lot. You can take an old spark plug & break the center electrode & porcelain out, then weld a fitting to that plug shell that will fit your compression tester..

Racing wires found under the guise of high performance parts are usually copper stranded wires. Good luck.

Hey Clooney
You'll never geuss what, She started. I put some more gas in it and checked if there was any spark(there was). I did what you said by mading an old plug gap 3/16 and see it the spark will jump it, it did but the spark wasen't blue it was like a regular spark. I'm still trying to get it to run properly. Do you know of any places in Ontario or in the States that is close to Hamilton so that I could get the proper spark plug wires and plugs??

Thanks Daniel

Daniel, if you are not in a big hurry give John R. Brillman a call [610-252-9828]. He has good quality ignition parts & will UPS them out as soon as he gets the order.
~If you have an old fashioned hardware store, or old country auto parts store in your area see if they still have any Packard 440 ignition wire & terminals [some of the older one still carry it]. That Packard 440 is a good solid steel core ignition wire that makes excellent tractor ignition wires. Until you find new spark plugs use 2 spark plug gaskets under your spark plugs as that raises the heat range a little.
~On that spark, as long as it wasn't orange you should be OK..... ..
