KEVIN, it depends on the amount of wear in the trans & the amount of noise it makes.
~The original gear oil used was 90 weight GL-1 gear oil. ~Most gear oils commonly available today are GL-5 or higher. The new GL-5 or higher gear oil is a easier flowing thinner gear oil [at lower temperatures] that will probably be nosier, & will probably leak easier.
~If you can find it, a GL-1 [not just rated for GL-1 use] gear oil would be the quietest & less prone to leakage. You could even use a GL-1 in 140 weight if you are only using the tractor in the summer.
~You don't gain much with multi-weight gear oils in the old Deere 2-cylinders as they don't run hot enough in the straight cut gear trans to benefit from the multi-weight gear oils & will for the most part stay at the lower number while working...

80-90 gear oil would be fine to use year around.
