Just brought home another H parts tractor looks like it has never been shedded in its life!!! Sheet metal almost non existant, wheels rusted almost to the ground, but started disassembling and first the governer and it has a set of fanshaft gears in it that look brand new!!! That will save me about $300, carb looks good no water inside, inside block looks good!!! I am well pleased with the purchase but this almost always holds true. My others have paint on them but mechanically are in need of help? Anyone else experience this??

Alot of those good looking tractors have a "krylon overhaul". Paint over all the bad looking stuff. Regarding washing waxing kinda things, my dad NEVER, ever, ever washes a piece of equipment, maintance yes, (he'll paint a grain drill w/ used oil & diesel), they all look like crap, but function mechanically great.

I know what you mean. My 48 A isn't the best looking tractor in the world but she sure is an hinest old girl that runs with the best of them.

I know what you mean, my dad and i just bought a 2520. it looked nice and seemed to sound nice, but that was not the case. a reman engine and a new clutch were needed to make the tractor field ready. my dad and i dont even want to look at the transmision.

That's how most of my stuff is. The reason it is so is because I only have so many hours per month to do maintenance, and the maintenance I do first is invariably the mechanical stuff. The cosmetics are secondary.

By the way, there are lots of rusty tractors that are bad on the outside as well as on the inside.....

Mine was bad inside and out. I'm gradually getting the mechanical and appearance back in shape, but it's a long expensive process.. Sure is fun though.

My theory is some farmers didn't care about looks but know how to keep up on oil changes, adjustments etc. Some farmers cared about having a great looking tractor but weren't mechanically inclined or don't bother to change things as needed. Just my thought.

I often wondered that myself..... ..The Farmall 400 we bought is one ugly beast, but pulls like mad in the field. Everyone makes fun of it but it does the job and hasn't needed any repairs mechanically.

I work at a John Deere dealership and we have several customers that will wash and wax their tractors every week but never service them. Still they think they are taking very good care of their equipment. I always tell our salesmen when they are about to trade for one of these tractors that "glossy paint dont pull anything".
